Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass - “Tangerine”

I listened to this song at least 15 times in the past 48 hours. Best song off of Whipped Cream and Other Delights, in my opinion. Gimme some wine and a nice homemade dinner, and it’s over. Yall gotta get on that Herb Alpert tip, btw.

John Coltrane - “Blue Train” (1957)

First track. Title track. Blue Train. This was the first song that came on shuffle on the ride back home tonight. Good call, ipod!

I geeked out pretty hard when Bev showed me that she found this at Amoeba. I told her to purchase Dave Brubeck Quartet’s Time Out, but then she whipped this out when she got home! MAN. A double vinyl of Time Out and Gone With The Wind! It was the last one left and it was only $4! Amazing! I never get this excited about material items anymore, but I seriously felt like a little kid with a new toy today. Amazing. Whoo!

I need a new record needle, btw.

The Dave Brubeck Quartet - “Blue Rondo A La Turk”

Time Out, 1959. Track #1. Written in 9/8 and transitions into swing 4/4.

The Dave Brubeck Quartet - “Far More Drums” (Time Further Out, 1961)

As the title states, there are just far more drums in this piece. More than the song before it, “Far More Blue,” in fact, which I’m certain was a conscious decision at cleverness through track-listing.

It’s amusing to listen to the transitions in this song, since there are no segues from one portion of the arrangement to the drum solos; it just jarringly happens without a precursor.
